What is a Department of Excellence

The Departments of Excellence are identified and funded by the MUR every five years as the best 180 Departments of state universities. These are Departments that stand out for the quality of the research produced and the quality of the development project presented.

Fragility: the project of excellence of the Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences for 2023-2027

DIMEC's activities focus on the disciplines of internal and specialized medicine, general and specialized surgery, and public health, including clinical care activities. The department's development project focuses on the theme of fragility, understood as a human condition that increases the risk of developing disabilities or even lethal complications when the individual is exposed to stress. The theme is of growing relevance due to its prevalence in the population at every stage of life, its clinical implications, and the socio-economic impact that the onset of fragility entails.

The department's commitment to this issue involves the creation of an integrated platform to facilitate research activities on fragility, standardizing research approaches and sharing technological resources, scientific knowledge, databases, and biobanks. Furthermore, the collaboration network and the dissemination of clinical knowledge will benefit people, who will be able to rely on healthcare professionals trained in fragility and prevention activities once high-risk profiles have been identified.
