About us
We work in synergy between caring for people, scientific research, and training to develop solutions that improve collective health and well-being.
DIMEC has a long history, and its creation gave rise to the largest department in the field of healthcare at any Italian university: an impressive structure in terms of size, scientific output, and clinical excellence, integrating all aspects of biomedical and translational research and covering all aspects of prevention, diagnosis, and therapy. It also offers excellent training, preparing highly qualified professionals to face the challenges of future medicine.
A department capable of responding to society's needs and supporting technological innovation, with a particular focus on the needs of the most vulnerable members of society.
We are committed daily to creating an optimal synergy between healthcare, research and training activities, thanks to advanced infrastructures and strategic programs. This ambitious vision aims to generate a significant impact in the Italian and international scenario, contributing to developing improved solutions for collective health and well-being.
DIMEC represents a complex and articulated reality, with 51 Scientific-disciplinary Sectors, 7 research areas and a vast educational offer. The distribution of activities across five sites, from the Bologna Campus to Rimini, and the close collaboration with the S. Orsola IRCCS and the Romagna Local Health Authority, testify to our commitment to research, teaching and clinical practice.
The Sant’Orsola IRCCS represents the fulcrum of the Department's research, training and healthcare activities, with a constant expansion and strengthening of initiatives. This model of integrated collaboration is the engine for continuous and sustainable progress in the academic and healthcare fields.
Research
Our mission is to promote integration and cooperation among the different research groups, both clinical and biomedical, in order to address and investigate scientific issues of great relevance, with an interdisciplinary and innovative approach. Research activity is organized into seven main areas. Each area integrates numerous research groups, centers and laboratories dedicated to basic, translational and clinical-diagnostic research.
Education
The Department offers 14 bachelor's and master's degree programs, including some taught in English, 5 doctoral schools, and 43 specialization schools. Teaching activities are spread across the campuses of Bologna, Imola, Ravenna, Forlì, Cesena, and Rimini.
Our commitment to society
The Third Mission represents the University of Bologna's commitment to making its knowledge and expertise available to society, going beyond the boundaries of research and teaching. For the Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences, this means transforming scientific knowledge into shared value, into training, dissemination, and collaboration experiences that respond to the needs of the community. The goal is to build a constant and transparent dialogue with citizens, patients, institutions, schools, associations, and businesses, so that medicine and science become a common heritage, accessible and useful to all.
The department collaborates strategically with other departments of the University of Bologna and with stakeholders in the social and healthcare sector: the Emilia Romagna Region, the IRCCS AOU of Bologna Policlinico di Sant'Orsola, the AUSL of Bologna and Romagna, and patient associations. Together, we enhance our knowledge and skills with a single goal that encompasses all our efforts: the well-being and health of the community.
We promote interdisciplinary dialogue between medicine and other disciplines, including the arts, to make scientific communication accessible to everyone. Our activities extend throughout the region, involving anyone who may be interested in medical research, from secondary school students to healthcare and hospital institutions and medical companies.
