Both departments were already the result of a merger process implemented in 2012, involving numerous professors, researchers, and technical and administrative staff who had previously been affiliated with various departments of the then Faculty of Medicine and Surgery. The guiding principle at the time was also the desire to promote integration and cooperation between different research groups in both the clinical and biomedical fields, helping to identify common themes of particular scientific relevance.
The New DIMEC has a long history, and its creation has now given rise to the largest department in the Italian university system in the field of healthcare: an impressive structure in terms of size, scientific output, and clinical excellence that integrates all aspects of biomedical and translational research.
The vision of the New DIMEC is summarized in the statement by the Rector, Prof. Giovanni Molari:
“The desire to create such a department reflects an awareness of the complexity of the challenges that universities and public research centers face in biomedical and clinical research, challenges that drive us to combine our best energies and seek strong institutional collaborations.”
