Use of dermatoscopic diagnostic techniques for the early diagnosis and treatment of periocular neoplasms

Non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSCs)—primarily basal cell carcinoma (BCC), but also squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)—can sometimes affect the eyelids and the periocular area. High-resolution dermoscopy may aid in the diagnosis of early NMSCs in this region, although their dermoscopic features have been rarely reported. NMSCs of the eyelid margin can often be misdiagnosed, since they initially resemble inflammatory diseases such as blepharitis. However, an early diagnosis of NMSC in this site is crucial, in order to allow successful surgical excision. We propose a multidisciplinary approach, using non-invasive diagnostic techniques such as high-resolution videodermoscopy, which can not only lead to an early diagnosis but also guide the surgical excision of the neoplasm.

The collaboration between ophthalmologists and dermatologists is of great importance in the diagnosis and treatment of these neoplasms. Videodermoscopy can also aid in the follow-up of previously excised periocular NMSCs.
