Biomechanics and Radiation protection laboratory

The laboratory carries out research in traditional fields of physics applied to medicine: radiation protection, biomechanics and analysis of biomedical signals.

Research areas

Radiation protection:

  • Optimization of vascular angiography procedures using CO2 as a contrast medium
  • Optimization of diagnostic and interventional radiological procedures in the cardiovascular field.

 Acqusition and analysis of biomedical signals:

  • Analysis of forces and spontaneous and pharmacologically induced motility on animal tissues;
  • Analysis of signals of neurological interest (e.g. ECG, EEG, pressure, etc) for the study of the autonomic nervous system (e.g. HRV);
  • Analysis of endocardial signals for optimization of biventricular stimulation;
  • Passive aortic counterpulsation;
  • Monitoring of parameters using non-invasive techniques.

 Cardiovascular biomechanics:

  • Cardiovascular biomechanics: optimization of energy transfer between pump and load;
  • Analysis of the mechanical behavior of CO2 during injection for vascular angiography procedures.

Activities on behalf of third parties

Instrumentations :

  • Mechanical simulators of the cardiovascular system for the study of the heart and the peripheral arterial system;
  • Acquisition modules of bioelectrical signals (ECG, EEG, EMG), arterial pressures and flows;
  • Video and signals acquisition and analysis system (ANScovery System, SparkBio Srl);
  • RX tube (Sias) with flat panel (Varian);
  • TLD dosimeter reading system (Mettler Toledo);
  • Male Art Phantom (anthropomorphic phantom full body, code ART-200);
  • Instrumentation for dose measurement;
  • Basic instrumentation of an electronics laboratory (testers, oscilloscopes, function generators, components).
