Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome - OSAS

This research group is dedicated to the study of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), both in pediatric and adult patients. This is a life-threatening disease with a very high disease rate of 3–7% in the general population, with a number of anatomical abnormalities and neuromuscular dysfunctions that lead to repeated episodes of partial or complete airway obstruction during sleep. OSAS is associated with significant morbidity, such as cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, daytime hypersomnolence, neurocognitive deficits, and reduced quality of life. The role of the ENT head and neck surgeon is fundamental for classifying patients correctly and offering the most appropriate treatment options.

Research areas

Study of the causes of OSAS; instrumental investigations and surgical treatments of the pediatric and adult OSAS patient.

Research projects

  1. definition of the causes and mechanisms underlying the collapse of the airway in OSAS patients;
  2. definition of anatomical and polysomnographic features for the phenotypic classification of the OSAS patient;
  3. study of the implementation of sleep endoscopy ("Advanced sleep endoscopy") in order to improve the sensitivity of the diagnosis and to correctly classify the patient’s OSAS phenotype, for an appropriate personalized therapy;
  4. study of the anatomical and functional results of oropharyngeal surgery in the OSAS patient, in particular of lateral expansive pharyngoplasty with barbed suture (barbed-functional expansion pharyngoplasty).
