A dynamic network of molecules in our bodies, the extracellular matrix (ECM) continuously changes and remodels to maintain normal cell function. Without ECM, anchorage-dependent cells would die, but with too much fibrous matrix cells would not survive. This matrix repairs and heals, however if an injury persists it accumulates in vast amounts leading to extreme scarring and cell death.
